"Lila!" I smiled when I saw Derrick and Josh sitting in the corner at the coffee shop. Of all my family I saw them the least since they became so successful. They both stood up to hug and kiss me shamlessly.
"I miss you guys." I admitted, ordering a latte with an extra couple shots of espresso since I'd been up all night painting.
"We miss you too tiny girl." Josh nudged me and I leaned back in my booth.
"Tell me everything. How's production for the show going?" I asked Derrick, always being fascinated by his stories of the semi-famous.
"Good, my character is going to develop a drug problem next season after going under cover." he grinned and I rolled my eyes.
"How cliche is that?" I shook my head.
"Hey I don't write it. I just make it work." he winked at our waitress who was playing that game in her head of "Where do I know him." It happened all the time with him.
"Yes yes you're so talented" I rolled my eyes. "Are you seeing anyone?" He shrugged.
"I see lots of people."
"That's code for fu.cking all the extras in the show." Josh grinned into his coffee and I laughed.
"Oh those poor wanna-be actresses." I fake pouted before turning to Josh.
"What about you?" He shook his head.
"Uh uh. You don't get to stick your nose into our lives until you tell us about your new boyfriend." He said, pointing at me and poking my nose with his finger.
"It's not exactly new." I pointed out. "I've been with Travis for a few months now."
"And yet the family doesn't know anything about him." Derrick pointed out, narrowing his eyes.
"You've been talking to Reece." I said with a sigh, my cop brother always way too much of a damn busy body.
"He doesn't like him."
"He doesn't know him." I answered seriously. Josh leaned back and watched me.
"This isn't like your thing with Riley." He commented. I licked my lips and shook my head, since I missed my friend, but everyone had been right, we were always teetering between friends and more than friends and with me in a relationship? It didn't work.
"No." I said seriously because what I had with Travis was nothing like anything else I'd ever experienced.
"So then you actually like him." Josh commented, surprising me.
"I liked Riley!" I exclaimed, for some reason feeling the need to stand up for myself from my past.
"Yeah, sure but not in the same way he liked you." Derrick replied, making me gape at both of them.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about the fact that you stayed with him because he was the only guy you knew who had balls enough to stand up to us in high school. He wasn't your first choice." Derrick started.
"He was your only choice." Josh finished.
"I-" I said, because damn, they had a point.
"But now you're in love." Josh said simply, watching my face carefully. I felt my face flush as I nodded.
"Very much." I admitted.
"Fu.ck." Derrick shifted in his chair. "What's that like?" I sighed because it was a complicated question. On the one hand it was the best feeling I'd ever felt. Travis made me feel alive, made me feel wanted an special and important. But as much as I knew he felt for me? He wasn't in love with me. Not now at least, so even though we were together, my heart broke a little whenever he didn't say the words back.
"It's hard." I admitted finally.
"Because he's a-" Derrick looked at his phone. "Self absorbed as.shole who doesn't care about anyone or anything?" I blinked.
"Are you reading that from your phone?"
"Text from Reece. He wants us to knock some sense into you." I quirked a brow at them.
"And is that what this is? A Travis intervention? You haven't even met him."
"Good point. We want to." I felt a lead in my gut. As much as I knew Travis was a good man? He didn't make a very good first impression. At least not to the brothers of the girl he was sleeping with. My brothers would write him off as an as.shole immediately and then my life would be even more complicated. That was if he even agreed to meet my family. Which I doubted.
"I guess that's fair." I admitted.
"Why do you sound like we just sent you to death row?" Derrick asked.
"Honestly? I'm still in the fun beginning part of the relationship. I don't know if I want to push out of it yet." I didn't mention that lately we were in and out of it, fighting and then being perfect. But wasn't that normal? I didn't know.
"Ahh, she still wants him all to herself." Derrick nodded.
"Eww." Josh shook his head and made a face.
"Hey!" I chucked my napkin at him and he held his hands up.
"I love you, but you'll always be my baby sister. In my mind you're still a cute little innocent 16 year old." I rose my brow since I had lost my virginity at 16. Probably better not to tell them that though.
"Trust me. I've taken her to industry parties before. She's not so innocent." I grinned wickedly at Josh who shoved my brother.
"What the fu.ck are you doing taking her to industry parties?"
"Oh please, she could eat alive most of the guys I know." He shook his head. "This Travis must be quite a guy." I smiled.
"He really is."
